Set the tuning curves to pure 3:1 and turn off all other sliders. This works well on large concert grands with low IH. Tuning the piano using 'pure 12ths' makes the 5ths -1.23 cents (compressed), the octave +1.23 cents (expanded) by definition. It therefore balances out the first three partials evenly. Then play chromatically ascending chords where the left hand is the octave, the right hand is the 12th, 15th, 17th. That way you are playing all of the first 5 partials. I used the PianoSens sensor device for the IH and the tuning. The tuning you will hear is so clear and pristine. Two concert tuners told me they have never heard a cleaner tuning of a piano.

Bernhard Stopper has claimed that with the Pure12th tuning it is possible to tune different instruments together for a concert.

How do you assess this statement and do we get into this area with the settings as described above?

I have problem with to much open 12 and 15.

Hello Steven, can you make another recording the same way with slow arpeggios, several arpeggios over the entire range and perhaps a short piece of music? This would be helpful to hear how the tuning is unfolding. When I am tuning I imagine the pianos as a little world, the bass is the earth, the middle section are many flowers and plants and the higher section are the sparkling stars above. When this little world step by step comes in existence I am content - and the client too.

Here I made a similar recording for demonstration. Just a different style and adjusted treble from A#4 to C8 -2 cents per octave. It's a small piano - size 177, so the bass tones don't come through so cleanly.

It is a quick tuning. about 35 min, so there are mistakes. Overall, the result is audible.

A few years ago I was able to try Stopper’s app. He let me have a free trial version as I was giving a class on ETDs for the PTA (UK). I used it on some tunings for a month or so. It completely fell down on a tuning for an old Blüthner grand. This was a piano with very low inharmonicity and the top several octaves were so sharp that it was unacceptable. OnlyPure didn’t measure inharmonicity at all so all the tunings are the same.
