Poor indicator response while tuning the high treble

Hello, today I used pianoscope for the first time and although the tuning was good, I found it impossible to fine-tune the last (7th) octave of the piano. The vertical line/indicator behaves erratically by quickly shifting from the far-left to the far-right side of the spectrum and sometimes even disappearing. The piano is a newer high-end grand. I will try using the app to tune other pianos in the coming days and compare how the indicator behaves but wanted to see if someone else has a similar experience.

Ted Hello Ted. Thank you for your feedback. Which version of pianoscope are you using? The tuning of the upper octave should not behave like this. The main causes for these jumps are usually resonances from the other undamped strings. In most cases, pianoscope can deal with this. If you can find the time, it would be great if you could make a recording of some notes which show this behaviour. You can use the "Voice Memos" app for it which should be installed by default on your iPhone or iPad. Simply record the notes like you would play them during tuning with the iPhone put in the same place as during tuning. If you send the files to support@pianoscope.app I will analyze them.

I used the v2 version. I had only a single string sounding with the other two muted while this happened. Will try to go back to that piano to record it and email you the sound file. Thanks!

Ted Thanks! With resonances I meant undamped strings of other notes which always resonate in the high treble.

I often mute the undamped strings when tuning the top octave. Seems to help make the readings better

A cloth on grands. Sometimes rubber mutes on uprights.

Rick This is a nice workaround. But I am sure that I can improve the behaviour in pianoscope. If you can send me some example recordings of notes which make the most problems, I can analyse them.

Hello Frank,
I have noticed that on all iP11 + iP SE 1st gen + iP SE 2020 devices when tuning C7 the sensitivity is too low. Only this one tone. The strobe only responds with a delay of about 3-5 sec. You turn the tuning pin and the strobe shows the same thing over and over and only after 3-5 sec does it change.

No need to explain the procedure to achieve this. Every time you tune on every piano. Try it yourself on your piano.
