Tuning Curves

I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on tuning curves and which ones they are using for certain pianos? I’ve mostly used the Balanced tuning curve for most pianos with great results. I’m coming from CyberTuner and I would mostly use Pure 12ths, OTS P on all upright pianos and smaller grands and more stretched octaves with 7-9 ft. grands.

I’d like to explore this option more and choose the best curves from the date collected.

Kris The Balanced curve is a great preset. It is a compromise between pure twelfths and octaves. If you want a style similar to Cybertuner's OTS P, you can use the "Twelfths Pure" style in pianoscope. But in the OTS P style, Cybertuner applies an extreme stretch to the high treble that goes beyond pure twelfths. Pianoscope does not do this. If you want such extreme high treble stretches without any pure intervals in pianoscope, you need to use the "Extra Stretch" parameters in the tuning style settings.

This is from a Shigeru Kawai EX 9” piano at a church I tune for and would really like to dial it in. I’m currently using the Balanced curve. I have the “beat frequency” option turned on.

Thank you, Frank. I’ve watched the Gazelle YouTube video you’ve made, but do you think you might be able to put out a video going more in-depth with tuning curves and how to interpret a piano you’ve measured for the best fit?

Kris The main idea behind the tuning styles in pianoscope is that you don't have to interpret the measurements. The app does it for you. You only have to choose, which intervals you want to have pure. pianoscope automatically adjusts the tuning curve to the inharmonicity specifics of an instrument.
